So what are Jarrelook
all about...
Well... in short, we are a tribute band
playing the music of Jean Michel Jarre live in the
UK.
But...
In light of criticism directed at us by
one particular individual we would like to make it quite clear that we do
not play Jean Michel's work note for note, timbre for timbre, exactly as
he does - we have neither the money for specific synthesisers we would need
nor the personel required to play everything quite so exactingly...
What we do try to do is capture as much
of the magic of his music and of his live shows as possible within the limits
of our ability and ultimately, our budget. It is of course possible that
some Jarre purists out there may well not care for what we have done so far
and to you we can only apologise - please hang in with us for we are still
working hard, refining and improving each song as we go.
But hopefully there will be existing fans
and many potential new fans of JMJ who will like our work and if we can just
manage to get a few of you to go and see the BIG GUY himself after listening
to us then nothing would make us happier.
On stage, wherever possible,
we use the same instruments as Jean Michel including Nord Lead and JP8000
virtual analogue synths, Roland MKS-80 and D50/550, and the all essential
Mellotron of which we now have two. Back in our rehearsal rooms we used to
use an Eminent 310 Unique but frankly it was just too big, too old and too
heavy so now we use samples of that particular instrument and a couple of
other string synthesisers including a Solina.
Inevitably we must use midi sequencing
as only a humungous band could hope to play every part of a Jean Michel song
fully live and we are but two instrumentalists. However........ we made it
a golden rule on day one to play as much live as four hands possibly can.
To that end only bass, rapid "machine music" type parts which Jean Michel
obviously programmed an arpegiator or sequencer for originally, and drums
and some sound effects, are played by our sequencer . If there is anything
else required then we won't even consider playing that song. For this reason
Jean Michel's Opus 1 - Deuxieme Rendez-Vous - is unlikely to ever see the
light of day from Jarrelook as there are just too many
parts.........
Although we play most
of the well known numbers we have always tried to include some oddities,
rarities and un-recorded or un-released numbers. An example of this is a
special song he created for Athens called Akropolis. To ring the changes
we also include the instrumental B side of
strange single from his pre-Oxygene days slap bang in the middle of
the show.....
Our stage show includes
a lot of pyrotechnics - for indoor use they are of the smokeless variety
where ever possible, a little more expensive to buy but still almost as effective
as the full on eggy specials! We also have an extensive armoury of intelligent
lights working in harmony with lasers and Arkaos video synthesis. Finally
we have a special effects trick or three up our sleeves just to add that
little extra to the show........
Oh... did I forget to mention the laser
harp?
